  • Why should I choose film photography in the digital era for my project or photos?
Short answer: Film photography captures images through chemical reactions with light, offering a unique, natural feel that resonates more profoundly than machine-created digital images. Unlike digital photos, which are computer-generated within the cameras themselves and often aided by artificial intelligence, film's authentic, timeless character sets it apart, providing a depth and connection unmatched in our digital world. In-depth answer: Film photography is more than a visual medium; it's an art form that captures the soul of a moment. While digital photos are generated by computers within the cameras and often aided by artificial intelligence, leading to a uniform and machine-made appearance, film works differently. Utilizing a chemical process that interacts with light, film photography creates images with warmth and depth that can't be replicated with digital technology. Additionally, if you're looking for an even deeper level of creative control, large-format film photography allows for specialized movements like tilts, swings, shifts, and rises/falls. Achieved organically through mechanical adjustments rather than computer manipulation, these movements provide unparalleled control over focus, perspective, and depth of field. The film's grain, texture, and subtle nuances resonate on a level that goes beyond visual aesthetics, providing a tangible connection to the scene or subject. Beyond the technical aspects, the process of taking photos with film has night-and-day differences compared to digital. With a limited number of shots and no instant feedback, both the photographer and subject must be more intentional and generous in spirit. This fosters a connection and an engagement that's often missing in the digital workflow, where the process can feel dominated by computers, screens, and algorithms. Choosing film for your project allows for an experience that's rooted in tradition and craft. In a world that's increasingly moving toward automation and artificial perfection, film symbolizes human artistry and the beauty of imperfection. It offers a return to the essence of photography, where each image is a unique creation, filled with character and life. It's not just about how the final product looks; it's about how it feels, connecting with the viewer on an emotional and sensory level that's simply unmatched in our digitally dominated world.
  • Is it possible to preview images on-set during the shoot?
Due to the nature of film photography, immediate on-set previews aren't possible. This differs from some instances in motion picture filmmaking, where on-set previews may be achieved while using film. In film photography, this process requires a certain level of trust between us - trust that our pre-shoot discussions and the vision will materialize as envisioned. That's the unique charm and magic of film photography.

  • What's the difference between medium format and large format film for my project?
Both medium and large formats relate to the size of the film I utilize for capturing your images. They provide a distinct, vintage aesthetic different from digital photography. Here's a deeper look into the unique offerings of each: Medium Format: Medium format film has graced many renowned photographs over time. Larger than the typical 35mm film, it captures depth and detail, producing images that resonate with a genuine and vintage feel. Its attributes make it a preferred choice for diverse projects, from portraits and landscapes to fashion and still-life shoots. Versatility: With its adaptable nature, medium format can capture various scenes, moments, and ideas. The images often feel rich and almost three-dimensional, encapsulating subjects with clarity and warmth. Practicality: The compactness of medium format equipment allows for flexibility, making it suitable for diverse settings, even those with space constraints. Large Format: Representing the pinnacle in film sizes, large format excels in detail and precision, unmatched in the world of photography. This format shines when every nuance counts, from detailed product shots and expansive advertising campaigns to evocative beauty portraits. Depth and Detail: Large format captures the ambiance, mood, and every minute detail, producing images that are realistic yet nostalgic, immersing the viewer in the scene. Considerations: While large format offers unparalleled depth, it demands a more deliberate approach and can be a premium choice in terms of investment. Its results, however, can be compellingly immersive, making it a top pick for projects that aim for profound impact. How to Choose: Deciding between medium and large formats is based on your project's specific needs and aspirations. Both ensure remarkable fidelity, infusing your images with an enduring vintage allure. We'll explore each option in our pre-shoot discussions, ensuring the chosen format harmonizes perfectly with your envisioned outcome.
  • Do you photograph Boudoir-type shoots?
    Yes, of course.
  • Will you travel out of state?
Yes. Special rates apply. Contact with complete project details for an accurate estimate.
  • Can you assist with coordinating additional creative professionals, such as models or makeup artists, for the project?
Absolutely. Should your project require the collaboration of other professionals within the creative industry, I'm more than capable of assisting in sourcing the right talents to achieve the desired vision for the project.
  • Why can't I get my photos any quicker?
Some projects can be expedited for an additional rush fee; however, in general, the timeline is the timeline.
  • I like a photo I saw on your website. Can you make my picture look just like that?
Things like lighting setups, colors, backgrounds, and film stock are repeatable; however, there are intangibles within every photoshoot that can't be replicated. We can use any photo for inspiration, but ultimately it comes down to our concept, being in the moment, and the unique unfolding qualities I can see and capture during the photoshoot to produce your desired results.
  • Can I book you for a location shoot outside of the studio?
Yes. As long as the project details align with what I do, I'm open to all creative ideas.

  • What's the difference between film photography and digital photography for product shots?
While I specialize in film photography, it's worth noting the distinct characteristics and strengths that film brings to product shots, compared to the more widespread digital: Film Photography for Products: Organic Aesthetic: Film naturally offers a timeless and genuine look, infusing warmth and character into product shots. This can create a unique atmosphere that stands out in today's market. Tonal Range: Film's dynamic range captures intricate details in shadows and highlights, especially beneficial for products with subtle nuances. Texture and Grain: The inherent grain in film adds texture and depth, providing a tactile quality to images. Realness: One of film's standout attributes is its ability to imbue subjects with life and palpable existence. Whether it's products, food, or still life, film captures a depth of presence. In contrast, digital photography, while delivering precision and consistency, often produces images so polished they border on feeling sterile. The perfection achieved in many digital product shots can make them seem cold or reminiscent of AI and CGI renderings. While this can be suitable for certain contexts, film provides a warmth and real-world touch, making images more relatable and resonant. In Decision Making: Choosing between film and digital photography for your products is all about the essence and feeling you want to evoke in your audience. Digital photography provides razor-sharp renderings that, most times, can resemble CGI or AI manipulations. If you're seeking this ultra-clean, almost synthetic look, you might want to consult a specialist in digital photography. However, if you're leaning towards a distinctive aesthetic bursting with charm, depth, and a tangible feel — something fresh with a human element infused into the frame — then my film photography services stand out. Remember, it's about aligning the medium with your vision and the emotional resonance you wish to evoke.
  • Do you offer workshops or tutorials for those interested in learning film photography?
While I don't currently offer educational workshops or tutorials, I'm exploring the idea of providing educational content that dives into the intricacies of film photography - from understanding different film stocks to developing techniques, lighting, and more. • What if I need to reschedule my photoshoot, what is your policy?
I understand that unexpected events can occur, and here's how I accommodate these situations: If you need to reschedule your photoshoot, please do so within four weeks of the original date. This helps us find a new suitable date and maintain the project's momentum. If you need to reschedule beyond the 4-week window, unfortunately, the deposit will be forfeited, and the session will be considered canceled. If a cancellation occurs after we've already rescheduled once, the session will be canceled indefinitely. After a second cancellation, no further shoots can be scheduled. While these are the standard guidelines, I recognize that each situation is unique. If there are specific circumstances that require additional flexibility, please let me know during our pre-shoot discussions, and we can work out a solution together.
  • Is it possible to arrange for an early morning call time for the photo shoot?
Yes, we are more than willing to facilitate early morning shoots based on your needs. However, to ensure everything runs smoothly, and we can meet your requirements, please provide us with as much detail as possible when contacting us about your scheduling needs.
